GM Classics January 2012 News Letter [image]
New Year Edition
January 05, 2012

Dear GM & Nova Enthusiast,

This is the time of year I try to figure out how old I am in the business. But, my brain can no loner seem to figure how old say a 1999 car is when the year is 2012. At least not as fast as say a 1987 car and the year is 2001. Is anyone else having this problem recently? I honestly put 2012 in my calculator and subtracted 1982... of course, but to my surprise, this equals 30 years - unbelievable! It has already been 30 years of selling GM Classic & Chevy II parts for a living.

But, I have been into cars far longer than I have been in business with them! I was at my Dad's helping him clean up a few things and I ran across some dash plaques and show stickers from the early 80s. The focus for this article is the Car Craft Street Machine Nationals (click for photos).

The first time I went to the Street Machine Nationals was in 1980, and it was absolutely crazy. I had entered my first Nova, a 1972 2-door (click for photos) that I had bought from my Grandmother with 21k miles, red on black - a jewel.

When I entered that first year I was around car 4,500 out of 5,000 maximum entries. After cutting it that close I started to send my entry to my Dad's friend in California and then had Dad call him when it was time to drop the entry in the mail. The entry could not be post-marked before a certain date but you still had to be in the first 5,000. From that time on I was never over entry 1500. I went to the Street Machine Nationals as many years as they had the show near Louisville.

Before they were run out of Indy, I remember an instance where there were people 4 deep on the sidewalk laying water down from every water spout they could find - it was a burn-out fest! Then came the police in riot gear. I have yet to be as close to any of these well outfitted gentleman as I was that day, it was a site for blocks!

Another time, we met some other car nuts on the interstate while traveling to the show and we ended up staying in the same hotel. Tons of bench racing occurred that year.

The Hot Rod Power Tour (click for photos) has since replaced these shows for me; it is a great time and is a challenge to see if your car can make the trip.

Our first show of the year is the Nashville Auto Fest on January 21 & 22, be sure to get your orders in early because space is limited. Then on to February 5th for the Stones River Swap Meet in Nashville.

Valentine's Day is next month! We always sell a lot of gift certificates for this holiday, so don't be left out! Keep those orders coming because each time you purchase in the month of January your name goes in the hat for this month's giveaway pictured below.

January Prize

Sincerely,

Your GM Classics Crew

Approximately 10 years ago, I mentioned to a good friend of mine, Wayne Bushey of National Nostalgic Nova, that if he ever had the opportunity to purchase a "nice" Nova wagon in his travels to let me know.  At that point I had owned my '67 Chevy II SS for over 25 years, and Wayne thought I was becoming senile when I mentioned a wagon, but he agreed to be on the lookout... Rear End Gear Replacement: Changing Gears in that 8.2 GM Rear End By Patrick Knight.

"Sometimes that old original gear set just doesn't get the job done on the street or strip. After all, you can have all the power in the world, but it wont help if you can't put it to the ground. In this issue, Patrick finally gave in to his son's request for a gear swap in his '69 Camaro to give him better performance..."  Read more in Rear End Gear Replacement on our Tech Talk section.

Christmas Poem for Chevy Owners:

Twas the night before Christmas and in the garage,
There wasn't a trace of a Ford or a Dodge.
The presents were wrapped and the lights were all lit,
So I figured I'd mess with the Vette for a bit.

I popped the release and I lifted the hood,
When a deep voice behind me said "looks pretty good."
Well, as you can imagine, I turned mighty quick,
And there, by the workbench, stood good ol Saint Nick!

We stood there a bit, not too sure what to say,
Then he said "don't suppose that you'd trade for my sleigh?
I said "no way, Santa" and started to grin,
"But if you've got the time we could go for a spin!"

His round little mouth, all tied up like a bow,
Turned into a smile and he said "hey! Let's go!!"
So as not to disturb all the neighbors' retreat,
We pushed the Vette quietly into the street,

Then, taking our places to drift down the hill,
I turned on the key and I let the clutch spill.
The sound that erupted took him by surprise,
But he liked it a lot, by the look in his eyes.

With Goodyears a' cryin' and sidepipes aglow,
We headed on out where the hot rodders go.
And Santa's grin widened, approaching his ears,
With every shift up as I went through the gears.

Then he yelled "can't recall when I've felt so alive!"
So I backed off the gas and said "you wanna drive?"
Ol Santa was stunned when I gave him the keys,
When he walked past the headlights he shook at the knees!

Then the small block exploded with side exhaust sound!
Santa let out the clutch and the tires shook the ground!
Power shift into second, again into third!
I sat there just watching, at loss for a word,

Then I heard him exclaim as we blasted from sight,
"Merry Christmas to all, it's a good night!!!"

"Rusty Ragtop" for sale:

FOR SALE: SUPER CHEVY MAGAZINE'S "RUSTY RAGTOP" - '63 CONVERTIBLE SS.

The famous "Rusty Ragtop," one of the highest profile and complete Super Chevy Magazine project cars ever built, is looking for a new home. This original '63 Nova SS convertible was professionally crafted and was covered editorially in the pages of the magazine over a 10-year period. It is a Gold Class restoration featuring numerous NOS parts. Literally every part of this car has been rebuilt, replaced or restored, starting with a fully stripped body and correct six-cylinder engine right down to the OE-style exhaust system, professionally replicated in stainless steel! No expense was spared. Every nut and bolt has been taken apart and replaced. All trim was either replaced with NOS parts or professionally redone using factory specifications. All painted parts were powder coated to last. NOS grille, bumpers and brake drums are just a few of the new parts used to reassemble this awesome collector car. It even has an original NOS Bow-Tie locking gas cap.

This restoration represents hundreds of hours of detail and assembly. I have owned this Nova since 1993 and drove it before the restoration was started. Since completion, the car has been in a climate-controlled atmosphere in my shop at my home and has only been to four shows and two local parades. It is not driven on the street. There are less than a hundred miles on the odometer. The straight six/Powerglide combination runs perfectly.

Begrudgingly, I must sell the crown jewel of my collection to fund my daughter's education. The car has a very special meaning to me, and I want it to go to a good home, with an owner that appreciates its history and what it is - a high-profile example of the only year Chevrolet produced this model. You will not be disappointed with the quality of this restoration, as it is unquestionably the finest example on the planet. Offered at $69,500, the restoration value alone is nearly twice that. Seriously interested parties may contact me directly at  novaiiman@gmail.com. Please leave your name and phone number and I will call you immediately. The Nova is located in California and I will help with shipping logistics to buyer's location, at buyer's expense. For more pictures of this Nova visit my customer gallery at chevynova.com: Terry Cole's Rusty Rag Top.
